Zelda series: Zelda representation gets a big facelift here. The team-up idea was already examined closely as part of the Forbidden 7, however, so why not revisit it and give us another unique mechanic while giving the nod to a deserving character. For me, Dixie is just barely lacking the star power and unique moveset potential to stand on her own. The Mario series has several more iconic characters vying for that fifth slot, but I just don't see any of them being quite iconic enough or having the moveset potential to make it.ĭK series: K. Of course, there are a million other characters that could give us the same shock factor, so this one really comes down to personal preference. Geno would follow in ROB's footsteps by giving us that one last WTF moment to get us pumped for the release, while fulfilling a similar in-game function to the quirky bot whose slot has been mercilessly cannibalized. There's likely going to be another surprise character to be revealed very late in the development cycle, following in the wake of Wii Fit Trainer's shock appearance during the reveal. That said, I believe he has a niche to fill here. Geno is the least likely character here by leaps and bounds. Mario series: Let's go ahead and address the elephant in the room. That said, here's the breakdown explaining my choices: This is important from a marketing standpoint as they're trying to sell a brand new, content-filled title from a hugely popular series where the roster is the #1 selling point, hands down. I much prefer this philosophy over no cuts, as I think each game in the series needs to be able to stand out from the others. As a result, this one isn't super safe, and I rather like it that way. Rather than take the "no cuts" sentiment to heart, I latched onto the opposite extreme by considering that each character must be bringing something unique to the table. It seems like there are a couple ways to go right now with trying to make a predictive/realistic roster based on Sakurai's recent interview comments.
